The Public Dental Services (“DOT”) in Hordaland County, led by “Fylkestannlegen” (Chief Executive Dental Officer), has its administrative centre in Bergen. Bergen is the second largest city in Norway with some 250.000 inhabitants and is situated on the west coast.
The county of Hordaland has about 450.000 inhabitants. The countryside is picturesque with magnificent high mountains and deep fjords, along with possibilities for all kinds of outdoor activities.
· DOT in Hordaland has approximately 340 employees and 70 dental clinics in 5 districts, each district is led by a Chief Dental Officer (Overtannlege). The clinics have between 2 and 20 employees and are located in both urban and rural areas around the county.
· A newly educated dentist earns 38.300 NOK per month in and around Bergen, and 41.700 NOK per month in more peripheral regions.
For dental hygienists the salary is between 25.000 and 28.600 NOK per month, and for dental nurses between 21.900 and 25.500 NOK per month (all figures per 1.Jan. 2009).
· A dentist works 36 hours per week, while hygienists and nurses work 37 ½ hours.
All employees are entitled to 5 weeks holiday each year (plus one week extra from the age of 60). Employees are entitled to holiday pay if they have worked for DOT in the previous year.
· DOT cares for patients of all ages. Norwegian legislation specifies that DOT are responsible for offering free (or subsidized) treatment to all children and adolescents / young adults until the age of 20. In addition all disabled adults, the elderly, patients in institutions (hospitals, nursing homes etc.) and those with a mental handicap also have rights to these services. Most DOT clinics also offer treatment to the general public, who can choose between the private and public dental services.
· DOT aims to make sure that all employees keep up to date. We organize professional educational-courses locally each year, and employees can apply for funding to attend dental meetings / educational-courses in other parts of Norway and the Nordic Countries.
· DOT is at present negotiating with the University of Bergen to take over responsibility for the clinical training of students (both dental and dental hygienists) from August 2010. This will create new opportunities for those employed in DOT to combine a job along with post graduate education at the University.
REQUIREMENTS FOR WORKING IN DOT
· Adequate ability to communicate with patients and colleagues in Norwegian.
· Norwegian authorisation if you are a Dentist / Dental Hygienist.
· Formal training, preferably also a Norwegian authorisation, if you are a Dental Nurse.
