Hordaland and Bergen can boast some of the most important centres of education and expertise, in terms of scope and quality, in the whole of Norway.
The most important institutions include the University of Bergen (UiB), the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration (NHH), the Foundation for Social and Industrial Research (SNF), Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI) and its subsidiary Chr. Michelsen Research A/S, the Marine Research Institute, the Norwegian Underwater Technology Centre (NUTEC), Bergen High-Technology Centre (HIB), etc.
Other important education institutions are: Bergen University College, Stord/Haugesund University College, Bergen University College of Arts, NLA - College of Teacher Education & NLA - School of Religion and Education.
There are over 30,000 students at the universities and colleges in Hordaland (2008), i.e. 15% of the national total.
